I would describe our latest “Five Questions” interview as the most upbeat sad story you ever heard. I recently spoke with PinkaBella Cupcakes owner Margo Engberg as she prepared to close her Grand Ridge Plaza PinkaBella Cupcakes shop at the end of March. Like many Issaquah Highlands neighbors, I wanted to know — what happened?

In our conversation, Margo describes the impact the pandemic had on her small business, what she loves about the Issaquah Highlands community, how you can still get your PinkaBella treats, and her hopes for the future. Most importantly, she reminds us all: “If we don’t support small businesses, small businesses will not be around.”

Christy Garrard is the executive director of Highlands Council and a Dahlia Park resident.
