A Passion for Learning is Elementary at Issaquah Highlands

Blakley Hall Interior

Each school day at Issaquah Highlands’ Grand Ridge Elementary starts the same way. The students are greeted by school principal, Barb Walton. The school doors opened for the first time on September 6, 2006 with approximately 650 students in grades K-5.

Barb’s personal touch has been with her since coming to the Issaquah School District in 1999, as principal of Endeavor Elementary. Barb has been involved in education as a teacher, staff development specialist, assistant principal and principal, putting to good use her University of Washington training, that includes a Bachelor of Education and Masters of Education Administration.

In 2002, Barb was honored with a Catalyst Award – a recognition given to those whose positive influence is felt district-wide. Of the award, Superintendent Janet Barry said, “As district employees, we are not only moved to better performance but we understand more, work in new ways, and achieve truly different results because these colleagues work among us and influence what we do.” Catalyst awardees are nominated by co-workers and selected by the superintendent.

Barb’s commitment to education and love for children extends beyond Grand Ridge Elementary. She’s a member of the Board of Director’s for KidsQuest Museum, a children’s museum in the Factoria Mall. “KidsQuest is an interactive experience that generates excitement about learning and brings students and families together in the spirit of that excitement,” explains Walton. That same spirit of excitement has been experienced in her classrooms and under her leadership over the years.
